The Academy for Sciences & Agriculture (AFSA) High School is pleased to announce that Abigail (Abi) Carlson and Craig Munson are both recipients of $1,000 college scholarships, funded by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association (MCGA).

Abi Carlson will attend college majoring in agricultural education and minoring in theatre. Carlson has served as the AFSA High School FFA chapter sentinel one year and chapter reporter for three years. She has participated in the AgriScience Fair at the regional, state and national levels and numerous FFA Career Development Events (CDE) at the regional and state levels. “I want to be an agriculture instructor,” says Carlson. “I know how vital agriculture is in society, without it there would be no products, no food, no clothes, cars or anything else.”
Craig Munson plans to attend college and major in geology. Munson has served as a junior and senior FFA officer at AFSA High School. Most recently, he has held the office of Minnesota FFA Region IV reporter. Munson has participated in the state AgriScience Fair, several FFA CDE competitions, and this year he earned the state FFA degree. “For the past four years, I have known that I want to become a geologist,” says Munson. “The geology field relates to agriculture; soil science is a branch of geology.”

Located in Vadnais Heights, Minn., a community in greater Minneapolis/St. Paul, AFSA High School is a public charter school that first opened its doors in 2001. Since then, AFSA High School has experienced exponential growth in students attending the school, expanded to also include the middle grades and has achieved educational excellence. AFSA High School is the only public charter school of its kind in the state of Minnesota where students from grades 5 – 12 learn about the many science and agriculture careers available to them.
“We are very pleased to have MCGA join with our other sponsors to provide funding for AFSA High School,” says Becky Meyer, executive director and principal, AFSA High School. “The two MCGA-funded scholarships will help graduating seniors at our school attend college and pursue a career in agriculture and the agricultural sciences.”
